What we help with

Online therapy for social anxiety

Social anxiety is more than shyness. It is a strong fear of being judged, embarrassed or rejected, which makes ordinary situations such as meetings, phone calls, dates or eating in front of others feel like a test you are about to fail.

Signs you might recognise

Starting therapy online can be easier when the thought of sitting in a waiting room is part of the problem. Some people begin with phone or chat sessions and move to video when they are ready.

Recognising yourself in a few of these does not mean something is wrong with you. It means it may be worth a conversation.

  • Intense worry before social situations, sometimes for days
  • Blushing, sweating, shaking or a blank mind when attention is on you
  • Avoiding speaking up, phone calls or meeting new people
  • Rehearsing what to say and replaying it afterwards
  • Assuming others see you as awkward or boring
  • Using alcohol to get through social events

How therapy helps

Your therapist will suggest an approach based on what you want to change. Common ones include:

  • 1

    Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

Test your predictions about how others see you, and shift attention away from monitoring yourself.

    How it works

  • 2

    Behavioural experiments

Try small, planned social steps and compare what you feared with what happened.

  • 3

    Compassion-focused therapy

Soften the harsh self-criticism that follows every conversation.

Three things you can try today

  1. Turn your attention outward: what is the other person actually saying?
  2. Drop one safety habit, such as rehearsing sentences, and see what happens.
  3. Set small goals: one question in a meeting, one short call.

Common questions

Is social anxiety the same as being shy or introverted?

No. Introverts prefer less social contact and are comfortable with that. Social anxiety is fear: you may want connection but dread being judged. It is the distress and avoidance that make it worth treating.

I find video calls stressful. Can I still do online therapy?

Yes. You can start with phone or live chat sessions and move to video when you feel ready. Tell your therapist, and they will go at your pace.
